Start with the role of the space
If you want a defined surface for everyday activity, turf may be one option. If you want a planted garden with water use considered throughout the design, a xeriscape approach may be a better starting point.
Xeriscaping does not simply mean covering the yard with gravel. Plant choice, design and ongoing care matter. Artificial turf also has trade-offs, including surface heat and eventual replacement.
