Littleton’s 2025 landscape rules

Littleton updated its land use code in June 2025 (Ordinance 10, Series 2025). Where a residential landscape plan is required, such as new development, redevelopment or a substantial expansion, anyone proposing artificial turf has to supply product samples and manufacturer specifications, and the Director has to approve it. The same rules cap grass at 75% of the landscape and keep it out of tree lawns narrower than 6 feet and off slopes of 4:1 or steeper. Artificial turf is banned on nonresidential property.

If your project falls under a landscape plan, we can provide the product details the city asks for. If it doesn’t, we’ll still plan to the same sensible standard.

Established yards and mature trees

Many Littleton yards have large, established trees. They bring shade that keeps turf cooler, but also roots, leaf drop and uneven ground. We plan the turf edge and the base around the tree rather than cutting through roots, and we design for easy clean-up of leaves.

Dog owners often want a dedicated run. A fenced turf area with a free-draining base and a gravel border is easy to rinse and keeps paws out of the mud.

Water and soils

The city says all Littleton residents are served by Denver Water. Its Turfgrass Removal discount doesn’t pay for artificial turf. The Colorado Geological Survey lists swelling clay soils as a major problem across the Denver metro, so our base and drainage work is the same careful job here as anywhere.

A few things you might be wondering

Do I need the city's approval for artificial turf in Littleton?

Littleton's 2025 rules apply where a landscape plan is required, such as new development, redevelopment and substantial expansions. In those cases artificial turf needs product samples, specifications and the Director's approval. For a typical backyard update outside that process, check with the city if you're unsure, and with your HOA if you have one.

Will Denver Water pay towards turf in Littleton?

Littleton residents are Denver Water customers. Its Turfgrass Removal discount helps with removing grass but doesn't pay for artificial turf, and its 2026 places are already allocated.

We have big old trees. Can turf go underneath?

Often, yes, but we plan around the roots, shade and leaf drop. Littleton's landscape rules also limit turf in tree lawns narrower than 6 feet where a plan is required. At the visit we'll show you where turf works and where mulch or planting is better for the tree.
